ImageThree sugar free gums from Wrigley's have obtained the coveted ADA seal.  Find out how Wrigleys got the seal, which gums were approved, and what it means to you, the chewing gum consumer.

Prior to this news, the American Dental Association has not considered chewing gum for its ADA seal program.  Wrigley's is the first, and undoubtedly not the last, chewing gum to obtain the ADA seal.  Wrigleys had to submit scientific, peer-reviewed studies to the ADA that prove its scientific health claims.

In this case, Wrigleys showed that chewing their Extra, Orbit and Eclipse gums stimulated salivary flow, which in turn prevents cavities.  Saliva contains many essential cavity defenses, including calcium, phosphorous, and acid neutralizers.  It's our opinion that this specific claim holds true for just about any sugarless chewing gum, so look for Wrigley's competitors to submit similar claims for ADA review. Nonetheless, we congratulate Wrigley's on obtaining the ADA seal.

ADA seal means scientifically verified advertising claimsOur office supports the idea that manufacturers provide scientific proof of their claims, so we wholeheartedly support the ADA's expansion of their seal program into chewing gum and other oral health products.  As an ADA member office, we encourage you to look for the ADA seal on all your dental products.

 Here's the ADA News Gram:

The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA) has awarded the Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley Orbit Sugar Free Gum, Wrigley Extra Sugar Free Gum and Wrigley Eclipse Sugar Free Gum, the first chewing gum products available to receive the Seal. CSA awarded the three Wrigley products the Seal after reviewing laboratory and clinical studies showing "that the physical action of chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating stimulates saliva flow, which helps prevent cavities by reducing plaque acids and strengthening teeth." The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. will announce more details at a September 25 press conference in Chicago so it's possible some of your patients will see press coverage and have questions about sugar-free gum. Wrigley also will include information about the products in an upcoming mailer to ADA members. ADA spokespersons will also be present at the press event. See ADA.org and the October 1 ADA News for details.
